Tamper Evident Packaging

5 ways to enhance product security with packaging

4 mins

Security in packaging is a big deal. It always has been, and it always will be - especially when life-saving pharmaceuticals are involved.

Not only can security features in packaging help to prevent unauthorised access and theft, but reduced the chance of counterfeits too. What we’re saying is, you can’t afford to overlook security in packaging. It protects both your customers and your business. It’s well worth the small investment.

So, to help you achieve a safe and secure packaging solution, here are 5 ways to enhance product security with packaging.

1. Apply tamper-evident tape

If cartons are part of your current packaging solution, the chances are, you will need tape. But not just any old tape.

For additional security, tamper-evident tape can be applied to seal your cartons, creating a visual deterrence to any criminal activity. Tamper evident tape also provides the visible evidence needed to pinpoint where in the journey your product was accessed.

When looking to apply taper evident tape to your packaging, there are generally 2 options. A reinforced gummed paper tape, or a more traditional ‘void’ tape. But what’s the difference?

When applied, reinforced gummed paper tape creates such a strong bond that you simply cannot remove it without damaging the carton. This is what makes it tamper evident.

On the other hand, ‘void’ tape acts very similar to standard tape. There’s no extra strength, no damaging the carton on removal, the only difference is what’s left behind. Upon removal, the word ‘void’ is left repeatedly across where the carton was originally sealed. This means that no matter how hard you try to cover your tracks by re-sealing, the ‘void’ message will be obvious.

2. Use tamper-evident cartons

For even more security, tamper evident cartons can be used to ship valuable goods. These provides another layer of security, creating a package impossible to breach without leaving signs of permanent damage.

This is achieved through clever design, making use of internal folds that can’t be reversed without damaging the package.

3. Think about the branding on your package

Branding is important, especially for ecommerce businesses. It’s a great way to distinguish yourself from competitors, reach your target audience, and reinforce your brand. However, you may want to re-think about branding the outside of your package.

That’s not to say you should immediately remove all branding, and we’re certainly not suggesting that. But there’s a growing trend amongst businesses to brand the inside of packaging instead. Why? plain outer packaging doesn’t give away what may contain on the inside of the package. Think about it, if you saw a carton plastered with apple logos, you’d expect a number of phones, or laptops worth a significant value.

4. Add an extra label for security

Keep your packages safe by including an extra label on the inside of the package. This way, if the label falls or is torn off, there is an extra label with appropriate details somewhere else. It’s always a good idea to enclose an extra label, business card or letterhead with an address and phone number for both you as the shipper and your recipient.

5. Protect valuables with bespoke packaging

For the most effective and best value security in packaging, bespoke solutions are the way forward. By partnering with an experience packaging supplier, you can collaborate to meet the security needs of your products during shipment.

You may use 1, 2, or all of the points above to come up with a suitable, effective solution, but it all comes down to what your product and business needs for effective packaging, without overusing materials.
